How to Store Poly and PVC Tarps

Storing tarps can be a downright challenging affair if you do not know the right techniques on how to do it. Exposing a poly or PVC tarpaulin to certain elements during storage can destroy, if not weaken its otherwise longer-lasting material. And it all starts from where and how you store the tarp. Buying a lightweight or heavy-duty tarp is quite expensive and you need to do everything possible to protect your worthy investment.

Here are some practical ideas on how to go about storing your tarp at home:

Where to Store the Tarps

There are literally many places at home that can be fit for storing your poly or PVC tarp. However, you might need to consider the period for which you are going to store the tarp. For short term storage, an area or space that’s easily reachable can be perfect while for long-term tarp storage, careful consideration should be given to an area that’s dry and away from direct sunlight.

Some of the most ideal places to store tarps at home can be on or in between:

-Garage rafters

-Basement floor joists

-Tarp storage racks

-Attic open shelves

How to Store the Tarps

Before storing your tarps, you must first fold them accordingly. For a heavy-duty PVC tarp, you’ll need to fold the edges to the centre until the tarp is reduced to your desired length and width. The folding should be done properly to ensure the tarp remains intact, even in long term storage. You can fold a lightweight poly tarp in the same way or can choose to fold it using a rolling conduit in order to achieve wrinkle-free storage. The type of folding you adopt isn’t really that important. All that matters is how you store it.

Just before you fold the tarp, make sure it is thoroughly cleaned and dried. Never store a tent that’s still wet or damp as that can lead to mold development or worse still cause tarp material damage. And always make sure the place you are about to store the tent is away from heat, humidity, and direct sunlight (UV).

Conclusion

If you are really serious about storing your tarp in perfect condition(s) for the longest time, then you should follow these tips to the latter. With proper storage, you can even retrieve your tarp after a decade and find it in the very
same condition you put it. The good thing is you don’t need too many resources to achieve proper storage. All you need is proper technique.
